Siegel likely would have won there too, the Stars relentless defensive pressure and head-turning speed on the break eventually proving too much for Fulton in a 62-56 championship game win at the Maryville Christmas Invitational on Dec. 30 at Maryville's James Campbell Gymnasium. Siegel lone senior Treyton Harris, a highly-touted football defensive back being courted by a trio of Ohio Valley Conference schools, led a Stars surge that broke open a five-point game with two minutes remaining. A plus-one drive to the basket was followed by a scorching release for an easy duece off the break, lifting Siegel to a 62-50 advantage with 1:08 to play. Two late Fulton baskets weren't nearly enough, the Stars' victory far more covincing than the final score. Harris would lead all scorers on the night with 19 points to cap a tournament most valuable player three days. Damien Clark led a tall, shot-blocking Siegel frontcourt with 10 points on the offensive end. Robert Brandon and Charles Clark added nine each from the backcourt. Domenique Gooch had eight for last year's Class AAA state tournament semifinalist. Aden Burton, four, and John Simpson, two, finished the scoring for the champions. It wasn't the way Siegel (11-5) could score, however, that left an invitational crowd genuinely impressed with the Stars. "This year we're all about speed," Siegel coach Ben Dotson said. "We just tried to zone and make them shoot the ball." Kelvin Jackson had 13 for Fulton, including a pair of 3s, with Micah Goss adding 11, but they and the Falcons had to work for their points. Siegel almost put it away with a 23-10 first quarter, an everywhere zone defense largely the reason. "We're a defensive team," Harris said. "Defense wins championships; offense will come." Just as quickly, Fulton got hold of itself, turning the tables with a 24-13 outburst of its own the second eight minutes to trail only 36-34 at the half. It's as if Siegel didn't even blink. "They just got a little too much firepower for us," Fulton coach Jody Wright said. "I don't know if there was any one position. They used their quickness and speed and got us a little spread out. That's their game plan: to make you play fast." Harris pumped in nine third quarter points. Brandon, Harris and Burton each hit a trey in the quarter. It was enough for the Stars to pry the lead open to nine to start the fourth. Siegel's up-and-down approach never really allowed the Falcons to get close again. "I'm trying to lead my team to a championship," Harris said. "That's all we're looking forward to." Siegel looked a team ably weaponized task over three days at Maryville. |
